Abstracted Animals in Oil
In this course, we will explore finding a balance between realism and abstraction when painting animals in oil, using photographic references. Form and anatomy will help us create realistic animal images, while light and shadow will guide us through the abstraction process.
Participants will first learn to break down seemingly complex forms into simple geometric basic shapes. The painting begins with a drawing – a kind of map that guides us. We will identify important anatomical features of our subjects to create precise drawings. Afterwards, we will transfer the drawing into a painting using chiaroscuro contrasts and colors.
Finally, the abstraction process follows: Which details can we generalize or even omit while still recognizing our subject?
Suitable for beginners and advanced students.
Maximum 10 participants
Materials: Pencil, kneaded eraser, brushes, oil paints, 4 smaller canvases, gessoed panels or painting cardboard (not much larger than 18 x 24)
